Street photography featuring characters in Columbus

Artist Statement

“I decided on Street Photography as my project to force myself out of my ‘comfort zone’ of nature photography, and because I have always been drawn to the works of Winogrand and Cartier-Bresson. I originally planned to take only candid photographs but I soon realized the power of a portrait taken just as the person sees the camera but before they can react to it. My goal was to capture images of people whose actions or expressions engage the viewer, drawing the viewer in to imagine the story behind or the emotions of the subject. The woman in my gallery show image – who had been staring down people on High Street as they walked by – illustrates my vision of the power of a portrait.

Biography

Born and raised in NYC and on Long Island, I made my way to Columbus OH after living in CT for most of the ’90s. My interest in photography began in high school with the purchase of a Minolta camera. I quickly became interested in nature and landscape photography, photographing the area around my home on the Island’s North Shore. Over the years my photographic interests have expanded to include macro and close-ups, abstract/still life, and travel photography. This gallery exhibit is my first foray into Street Photography. I’m hooked.
