Music at an Exhibition

Artist

George Vaughan

Project Note(s)

Abstract photography

Artist Statement

In 1874, Modest Mussorgsky composed “Pictures at an Exhibition”, a suite for piano with 10 parts, each part inspired by a different painting. In other words, Mussorgsky transformed images, i.e. paintings, into musical compositions.

I was interested in reversing Mussorgsky’s process – that is, transmuting music into photographs. The images in my final piece represent the emotional energy I feel from 3 distinct pieces of music.

In summary, this project is my attempt to photograph music.
