Artist Statement

My goal with this project was to become more purposeful in my photography; to learn to create fine art quality images; and to explore black and white photography.

I have always been attracted by the stark, gritty, shiny and linear qualities of the urban landscape. A different kind of beauty. In this Minimalist Urban Vignettes portfolio project, I have attempted to capture and convey these aspects of the city environment. The minimalist approach, distilling the essential elements in a composition, is well suited for this project. The square format reinforces the linearity of the environment. The choice of black and white and the paper selection bring out the textures and grittiness of the urban environment.

Biography

I have been taking photographs since high school. Over time the subjects have included photos of family, vacations, exotic travel, events, nature, landscape, and wildlife … an eclectic mix. Since my retirement I have taken several photo courses and have participated in photo tours with the goal of improving my photographic technique, visual seeing and composition. I have been shooting mostly in color. Now, I am ready to explore black and white photography and how to create fine art quality images.

The Portfolio Class helped me develop my approach to minimalist seeing and my understanding of what makes a great black and white photo as well how to put together a portfolio.
