Artist Statement
As a mother of two young black men I know how important it is to provide them with an environment filled with love, encouragement, and support. As my children grew into men my efforts were constantly challenged by the media’s portrayal of young black men as being in a perpetual state of sadness or hostility.
Through this photography series “Smile My Child Smile” my hope is to change the narrative by showcasing black youth who are happy, peaceful and playful in their natural environment.
Biography
My name is Teresa Jones. I am the mother of two amazing young men. I am a novice photographer and a student of photography, learning portfolio project building. I have been learning photography for a little over a year. I enjoy portrait, abstract and nature photography. I am currently working on a photography portfolio project series “Smile My Child Smile” to help bring awareness to social bias.
